Womancipation

"Womancipation" emerged as a way to channel my emotions from a pivotal experience in my life. The figure is a representation of myself, with facial features subtly modeled after my own. She walks with purpose toward a new future, leaving behind another life.
The dove on her shoulder and her feathered costume symbolize freedom and emancipation, and her all-white appearance mirrors the dove’s aesthetic. The use of real feathers on the costume’s “wings” added a delicate quality that beautifully enhances the piece.
I envisioned the title ‘Womancipation’ as a play on words, putting the focus back on "woman" rather than "man."
Most of my figurative work centers on female dancers with influences from Art Nouveau or Art Deco. I typically sculpt whatever pose or form inspires me in the moment. "Womancipation," however, is my first sculpture with a defined narrative and deeper meaning, and my first mixed media piece. Though she may never sell, creating her has been profoundly therapeutic, making the journey worthwhile.
